Edema is defined as the abnormal accumulation of fluid underneath the skin in one or more areas of the body. Edema was formerly referred to as dropsy and hydropsy. The five factors that can cause the formation of edema are an increase in hydrostatic pressure, reduced oncotic pressure within the blood vessels, inflammation that causes increased blood vessel wall permeability, fluid clearance obstruction in the lymphatic area of the body and changes in the water retaining properties of the tissues of the body. There are different forms of edema, or forms specific to certain organs of the body. Those forms of edema include the following:
- cerebral edema
- pulmonary edema
- edema of the cornea of the eye because of glaucoma
- eye puffiness or periorbital edema
- contact dermatitis, which is caused by spider bites, bug bites, Poison Ivy, Poison Oak and mosquito bites
- myxedema (caused by an increased deposition of connective tissue)
- feet
- lymphedema
Use of Natural Diuretics
As with other types of medical conditions, edema can be cured or treated with natural diuretics. Natural diuretics cause the body to remove excess water because they make the person taking them urinate more frequently than a person normally urinates. Natural diuretics can be found in supermarkets all across the country and can be purchased without a prescription; unlike diuretic pills, which must be prescribed by a physician. Natural diuretics should not be that expensive to purchase since they are foods and drinks normally found and purchased in grocery stores across the country. Anyone wanting to cure their edema should consult their physician prior to starting a natural diuretic diet. Taking too many natural diuretics, if combined with diabetes, can cause a serious problem with the patient’s blood sugar. Anyone on a diet of natural diuretics should monitor their intake and blood sugar if they have diabetes.
Natural Diuretic Side Effects
There are side effects to taking natural diuretics and they include one or more of the following:
- excessive urination
- dry mouth
- dizziness
- increased thirst
- an imbalance of electrolytes
- increased blood sugar
- headaches
If you have been on a natural diuretic diet for some time now for the purpose of ridding the body of edema and are suffering excessively from any of the side effects mentioned above you should contact your physician immediately. These side effects can become serious to severe if not taken care of within a reasonable amount of time. If the doctor tells you to stop the natural diuretic diet then you should heed the advice and begin eating regular foods again so that your body does not lose too much water all at once.
